WHAT IS IT?

Established in 1995, the Red Hook Public Safety Corps is an AmeriCorps community service program that seeks to improve the quality of life in Red Hook through crime prevention and victim assistance projects. Part of the Red Hook Community Justice Center, the Public Safety Corps consists of 50 members, who range in age from 18 to 68, from Red Hook and surrounding neighborhoods. Participants perform one year of community service—fixing broken windows, painting over graffiti, cleaning local parks, tutoring students who need extra help, and linking victims to crime assistance and other social services. Visible and active within the community, participants are often able to serve as a first line of communication between the Justice Center and community members who may not trust courts enough to seek out assistance on their own. In return, participants receive valuable training, free child care, a small living allowance and a $4,725 education award that can be used for college or job training.

Key activities of the Red Hook Public Safety Corps include:

Housing Assessments: Participants work with the New York City Housing Authority to make physical improvements, like repairing broken locks and hallway lights, in and around the Red Hook Houses, one of New York's largest public housing developments. They also plan park clean-ups and graffiti removal projects.

Links to Services: Safety Corps members provide a constant link between community members and the array of information and services offered through the Justice Center, including domestic violence counseling, GED courses, mediation and clinical services.

Promoting Unity: The program brings people of diverse backgrounds together in constructive, positive ways—during conflict resolution workshops, through work at the local community gardens and senior center, and for special events like Coffey Park Clean-Ups, where volunteers work alongside community residents to make Red Hook's main park safer and cleaner. Corps members also organize popular community-wide events like a National Night Out Against Crime, Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration and Black History Month celebrations.

Student Assistance: Several members of the Red Hook Public Safety Corps work directly with local youth to instill knowledge of the justice system and help provide a solid education at an early age. From childcare facilities to the Red Hook and Harlem Youth Courts, tutoring, and Little League, Corps members are mentors to young people who might otherwise lack a positive adult influence in their lives. Participants also create and operate a youth baseball league that provides recreational activity to more than 200 kids each summer. Some of these youth have or have had court cases and need guidance to help them avoid developing criminal behavior; Safety Corps members help to fill that void.

RESULTS

All told, Red Hook Public Safety Corps members have completed more than 750,000 hours of service improving public safety in Red Hook by expanding the capacity of local criminal justice agencies, organizing tenant patrols in the Red Hook Houses, and generating a cadre of community volunteers committed to reclaiming local parks, streets, and other communal spaces. Over the past 12 years, the Red Hook Public Safety Corps has made significant strides in improving public safety in the local community and will continue to do so in the future.
